This engineering notation converter rewrites a finite number into the form mantissa times ten raised to an exponent that is always a multiple of three, which is the standard engineers use when reading component values, scopes, datasheets, and lab notes.

Unlike pure scientific notation, where the mantissa stays between one and ten, engineering notation keeps the mantissa between one and one thousand so the power of ten lines up with SI prefixes such as milli, kilo, mega, and giga. Small checks you can verify by hand include twelve thousand three hundred forty-five point six becoming about twelve point three four five six times ten to the three (or twelve point three four five six kilo), and zero point zero zero zero four seven becoming four hundred seventy times ten to the minus six (or four hundred seventy micro). The engine is fully deterministic: it uses only finite arithmetic, a fixed SI prefix table from quecto through quetta, and no network calls, randomness, or date-dependent shortcuts.
